Education is a very important part of everybody’s life. The education, as it is known these days was very different a few years ago. Before the beginning of schools; education was imparted to everyone in an informal manner but later on institution of school was started to make education uniform and formal. When education was made formal, teaching methods were also established to teach students. The fact is that these teaching methods have been undergoing a lot of change with the change in the scenario of the world.
Earlier, the teaching was teacher-oriented. It means, teacher had an authoritative place in the class and students were supposed to follow the instructions of their teacher without questioning. During this time, teaching methods included lecture method and explanation method. In both these methods, teacher used to explain concepts to students and students used to listen to their teacher without much questioning.
Later on, observing the interests of students, story-telling method was introduced in the schools. Under this method, rather than explaining concepts through lecture method, teachers started explaining concepts with the help of stories that students could relate to. Though this method was appreciated a lot by people but it was not enough in itself. Therefore, the changes kept taking place in these teaching methods.
Learning by doing was another teaching method which was admired a lot by students. Under this method, students were asked to take part in some activities and deduce their observation and this way, learning became more permanent and they could remember their inferences without cramming. This method is still used in schools for the explanation of some concepts. This method made education student-oriented rather than teacher-oriented.
Play way method and activity methods were other methods which was introduced so that students could start taking interest in the teaching- learning method. These days, amalgamation of all these methods is used in schools to make learning, a fun experience for students. Keep learning!
